How Economy Remapping Works

Most diesel engines are calibrated conservatively for emissions compliance and to handle varying fuel quality across different countries. They run with excess fuel at light throttle positions, and injection timing is set safely but not optimally for efficiency.

An economy remap rebalances the calibration toward efficiency — we smooth out torque delivery, reduce unnecessary fuel at part-load, and optimise injection timing to burn fuel more effectively.

This is not turning the power down. Done properly, the engine actually runs more efficiently — similar output, lower fuel consumption. The calibration is leaner and smarter.

For turbocharged diesels especially, there's substantial headroom. We recalibrate the turbo boost strategy and fuelling without losing reliability or driveability — you often get slightly better low-end torque and a smoother power curve as a side benefit.

Best Results On Diesel, Long-Distance Work

Turbodiesel engines are the sweet spot. Larger displacement turbodiesels have more calibration headroom than petrol engines. The efficiency gains are largest on long runs — motorway work, A-road haulage, logistics — where steady-state cruise is 80% of your use.

Vans, pickups, LGVs: If you're running a transit or crafter on regular long routes, an economy remap pays for itself in fuel savings within a few months. HGV operators with suitable vehicles can see substantial annual savings across a fleet.

Limited benefit on stop-start urban use — the gains are less predictable because you're accelerating more, in lower gears, not cruising efficiently. Where economy remapping really shines is consistent, highway-pattern use.

Fleet Rates & Compound Savings

If you run multiple vehicles, the savings compound quickly. A single van saving £1,500/year is good. Five vans means £7,500 annual savings. Ten vehicles and you're looking at real fleet-wide fuel reduction.

We offer discounted rates for fleet tuning. Contact us with the size of your fleet and typical duty cycle (long-haul, mixed-use, etc) and we'll discuss volume pricing and how to stagger the work.

For logistics and haulage operators, economy tuning across your fleet often has better ROI than many operational improvements. Diesel prices fluctuate, but fuel is always a significant cost centre.

FAQ

Will I lose any power with an economy remap? +

No. We're not restricting the engine. A typical result is similar peak power with better fuel consumption at cruise, and often slightly more low-end torque and smoother power delivery. The engine runs more efficiently, not weakly.

Does it work on petrol engines? +

Less significantly. Petrol engines have much less calibration headroom than turbodiesels. Most of a petrol engine's fuel mixture is already optimised for efficiency. You may see 2–5% savings on consistent highway driving, but it's not a strong application for petrol vehicles.

How long until I notice a difference? +

Usually within the first tank — you'll feel the smoother torque delivery immediately. Meaningful MPG data becomes clear over 2–4 weeks of normal use, as you complete a few full fuel cycles and can calculate accurate consumption.

Do you do fleet discounts? +

Yes. For operators with multiple vehicles, we offer volume pricing. Contact us directly with details of your fleet size, vehicle types, and typical duty cycles — we'll discuss tailored rates and scheduling to fit your operations.
